On the evening of September 22nd, the Funchal Guitar Quartet held a concert at St. Andrews Church in central Funchal to an attentive audience. The program covered a wide range of musical styles, from opera with Rossini's "Barber of Seville Overture" to Argentinian rhythms with Piazzolla's "Milonga" and "Libertango," and a Brazilian-inspired "Bossa Fantasia."
The second half of the concert included pieces closer to the island, such as "Variações em Mi Menor" and "Hommage to Madeira," followed by "Africa." The audience requested an encore, which was delivered with Brubeck's "Take Five," ending the evening on an upbeat note.
The quartet demonstrated remarkable versatility, masterfully interpreting opera, tango, bossa nova, Spanish romanticism, Portuguese tradition, and cool jazz. Concerts are held every Tuesday and Thursday, with online booking available.
