The concentration of cultural and educational facilities, services, and employment opportunities in Funchal, combined with tourism pressures, has created new mobility challenges in the Madeiran capital. In response, the City Council is developing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.
This plan will form the basis for municipal decisions in the coming years, aiming for an integrated understanding of the factors influencing travel within the city. Council President Jorge Carvalho highlighted the document's importance at the opening of the conference ‘The future of urban mobility in Funchal: Which path to follow?’, part of European Mobility Week.
The mayor emphasized that the future of mobility requires reflection on public and individual transport, electric mobility, tourism, employment, and housing. The municipal strategy also seeks to raise awareness about changing individual behaviors, recognizing that the sum of each citizen's actions contributes to collective mobility.
