The Autonomous Region of Madeira has an estimated need for around three thousand housing units to meet identified demand.
Leonel Silva, president of Investimentos Habitacionais da Madeira (IHM), presented this diagnosis during a visit by a delegation of ten MEPs to a controlled-cost housing development in Câmara de Lobos. The visit aimed to showcase investments made through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and future needs.
The needs assessment is based on registrations and expressions of interest received by IHM. Currently, the public housing stock managed by the regional company comprises 4,914 homes. Through the PRR, 808 units were built, with a total investment of 174.9 million euros.
Pedro Rodrigues, the regional secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, used the occasion to advocate for increased funding for housing, highlighting the importance of retaining young people in the region and the challenges of accessing the private market due to high prices.
