Funchal hosted a workshop on analyzing the vulnerability of urban water cycle infrastructure to climate change. The initiative, part of the European project ADAPTaRES WATER 2CAP, was organized by AREAM and the Canary Islands Technological Institute (ITC), with collaboration from the Regional Directorate of Environment and Sea (DRAM).
The meeting aimed to present climate risk assessment methodologies and apply them to Madeira's reality. Projections were shared, indicating a precipitation reduction of 24% to 65% by 2100, an average temperature increase of up to 4.9 degrees Celsius, and a sea-level rise of 0.6 to 0.8 meters, along with increased frequency of extreme weather events.
Participants conducted a practical exercise to assess the impacts of climate change on infrastructure such as treatment plants, desalination facilities, and distribution networks, proposing adaptation measures to enhance resilience.
