The National Republican Guard (GNR) recorded 25 operational interventions in Madeira since 2024, through its Madeira Protection and Rescue Post. These operations, which include searches, rescues, life-saving, body recovery, and assistance in various situations, took place between 2024 and the first half of 2026.
Data shows 12 incidents in 2024, eight in 2025, and five in the first six months of 2026. The GNR attributes the increased use of natural spaces for tourism, leisure, and sports as a factor for its specialized presence in the region, where the post was established in 2018.
Nationally, the GNR conducted over 400 interventions in mountainous areas since 2024, covering security, policing, and emergency services in hard-to-reach zones. The security force advises precautions for mountain activity participants, such as not going alone, informing family about the itinerary, and checking weather conditions.
