The Jaime Moniz Secondary School (the 'Liceu') was recently honored with a badge of distinction as part of the 50th Anniversary of Madeira's Autonomy celebrations. In a press release, the institution emphasized that it "ceased to be an elite school," underscoring its role in educating multiple generations of Madeirans.
According to Ana Isabel Marques da Silva, president of the Educational Community Council, the recognition marks the profound transformations within the school. The democratization of education and the autonomous regime, along with increased compulsory schooling and improved road networks, have significantly altered the student profile, making the Liceu accessible to everyone, regardless of social class or residence.
The school also highlighted the role of evening classes in the 1980s, which allowed many adults to complete their education. The institution dedicated the award to its entire educational community, acknowledging the contributions of students, families, teachers, and staff to its nearly two-century history.
