The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, José Luís Carneiro, has advocated for Autonomous Regions to have greater participation in sea management, particularly within the scope of a future constitutional revision.
Carneiro, who is in Madeira for the 'Sea Economy Route', visited the Funchal Marine Biology Station. When questioned about challenges in maritime management, he stated that instruments should be found to allow regions to participate more actively in the valorization of marine resources and the benefits of their management.
The socialist leader highlighted that the sea economy currently represents 4% of national wealth and employment, finding it incomprehensible that it is not a political priority. He believes Madeira and the Azores play a crucial role in this economic strategy, serving as an entry point to Portugal and Europe.
