The Popular Youth (JP) of Madeira recognizes the positive trajectory of the regional economy in the first half of 2026, highlighting the unemployment rate of 3.5%, the lowest in the country and a historic minimum for the Region. The organization points to increased employment and company creation as signs of economic capacity.
However, JP Madeira argues that this progress should be reflected in income growth. Following the increase in the regional minimum wage, the structure advocates for creating conditions for both minimum and average wages to continue growing above inflation.
JP Madeira's vice-president, Vasco Marcial, stated that "the next step is to ensure that this economic dynamic translates, in a sustained manner, into wage appreciation and improved purchasing power." The organization attributes some of these results to the work of the Regional Secretariat for Economy.
JP Madeira urges the Regional Government to continue social dialogue to increase wages above inflation while safeguarding business competitiveness and employment sustainability.
