Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira saw a 4.5% increase in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year. Renewable sources were particularly strong, although the second quarter performed less well than the first.
In total, between January and June 2026, approximately 488.8 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) were emitted. The growth was across all production sources, but renewables showed the most significant increases. Photovoltaic energy led with a 21.3% rise, followed by wind (+15.8%) and hydro (+5.1%).
Consequently, the share of renewable sources in the energy mix rose from 43.8% to 46.0%, while the thermal source's participation decreased from 56.2% to 54.0%. Natural gas also consolidated its importance, accounting for 20.7% of the total energy emitted, a 19.6% increase from the previous year.
