The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira with a speech focused on deepening the region's autonomy and criticizing the parliament's functioning.
Rafael Nunes, vice-president of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira (ALRAM) and elected by JPP, advocated for a political culture based on dialogue, pluralism, and strengthening democratic scrutiny mechanisms. He criticized the parliamentary majority for not engaging in dialogue with the opposition and for refusing to hear from associations and unions, warning about the need to preserve citizens' trust in institutions.
The JPP also highlighted social issues such as housing costs, healthcare waiting lists, precarious youth employment, and the rising cost of living. In terms of autonomy, they proposed revising the Regional Finance Law, greater financial and fiscal autonomy, reinforcing territorial continuity, and shared maritime management, along with recognizing regional laws and enabling regional referendums.
The party concluded that the best tribute to the Assembly's founders is to continue deepening autonomy, strengthening institutions, and prioritizing regional interests over party convenience, defending the dignity of the Madeiran and Porto Santo people.
