JPP and IL Propose Return of Regular Ferry Link Between Madeira and Mainland

The Legislative Assembly of Madeira is debating two proposals to re-establish regular passenger and cargo maritime links between the island and the mainland.

The JPP suggests that the State Budget for 2027 should include funds for the operation of the link, while the Liberal Initiative (IL) proposes evaluating the feasibility of a ferry service coordinated with existing routes to the Canary Islands.

The JPP argues that the link is of national interest, ensuring territorial continuity and reducing reliance on air transport, which burdens Madeiran companies. A recent IMT study acknowledged the public interest in the link, despite highlighting the need for compensation for sustainability, with 72% of the population considering the ferry vital.
