JPP councillors on Funchal's municipal council argue that around €4.3 million, which would go to the city if the Regional Government applied the law on municipal shares of VAT revenue, should be used to strengthen rental support for families, middle-income workers and young people.
Fátima Aveiro and António Trindade accuse the PSD/CDS Regional Government of failing to regulate the law, in force on the mainland since 2020 and in the Azores since 2023. They estimate a further €749,290.45 for 2027.
The councillors propose increasing the Municipal Rent Subsidy, both the amount granted and the maximum eligible rent. They say implementation depends on a political decision by the PSD/CDS, which holds a majority in the regional parliament.
