The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) councilors in the Funchal Municipal Chamber have criticized the Local Housing Strategy designed by the PSD/CDS executive, deeming it "manifestly insufficient". According to the party, the plan to build 300 social housing units by 2030 does not include solutions for the middle class and young people, despite records showing around 3,000 people with housing needs.
The JPP emphasizes that the presented strategy represents only a small step towards meeting real needs and that, even if the plan is fulfilled, it will cover only 10% of the identified total. The councilors recall that the housing problem already existed when the current executive took office and accuse the majority of failing to present a concrete plan for affordable housing after five years in government.
António Trindade and Lina Pereira, JPP councilors, question for whom the city is being built, given policies that do not provide objective answers to people's problems. They suggest that the Municipal Chamber should actively seek to use available land to create more robust and daring solutions for the housing emergency.
