The JPP party argues that the 33 million euro budget surplus projected for 2026 by the Funchal Municipal Chamber should be entirely channeled into housing.
According to councilor António Trindade, Funchal is facing a "housing crisis" and the municipality's proposed solutions are "insufficient" for the approximately 3,000 existing applications. Trindade suggests housing should be the "absolute priority," using the surplus for this purpose.
The JPP contends that current housing policies do not cater to the middle class or young people, who face increased difficulties due to a lack of qualified employment and the cost of living. The party questions the existence of affordable, controlled-cost housing projects for these groups in Funchal.
