A proposal by the Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party, presented by councilors António Trindade and Inácio Silva, aimed at valuing, protecting, and bringing people closer to Funchal's sea, was rejected at the city council meeting.
The JPP councilors expressed dissatisfaction with the majority's decision, viewing it as a "lack of ambition regarding one of Funchal's greatest natural assets." The proposal sought to establish a municipal strategy for the sea, including the creation of a Marine Eco-Park, and addressed ongoing concerns about water quality and reported discharges.
According to JPP, the proposal's rejection disregards existing scientific work and represents a missed opportunity to safeguard marine heritage.
