Lourdes Castro's Caniço Home Listed for €4.1 Million

The house and garden of Madeiran artist Lourdes Castro in Caniço have been put up for sale for €4.1 million.

The home of the renowned Madeiran artist Lourdes Castro, located in Caniço, is now on the market for four million and one hundred thousand euros. The property has garnered attention from the local cultural community and media, and is listed on the Idealista platform via Sotheby's.

The estate, spanning nearly 13,000 m², was designed by the artist and architect Manuel Zimbro. Castro considered her house and garden inseparable, an extension of her creative process, viewing the garden as her "ultimate work of art." Her vision was for the house to be preserved as a museum and the garden maintained as a tribute to her art, akin to Monet's gardens at Giverny.

The listing emphasizes the property's heritage value, describing it as a living testament to Castro's art and vision. The property includes a built area of 1,500 m², offering potential for renovations to the existing residence and for developing tourist ventures or single-family homes, while respecting the surrounding natural beauty.

Previous attempts by the PS and JPP parties to classify the house as a property of public interest did not lead to final approval, although both parties voted in favour of the proposal.
