The Regional Secretary for Inclusion, Labour and Youth, Paula Margarido, argued in Bragança that the protection of vulnerable individuals must balance the safeguarding of their rights with respect for their autonomy, will, and dignity.
During her address at the national conference “Age and Vulnerability: Where Should the Law Go?”, Margarido presented Madeira's regional policies, stressing that law and public policy should be person-centered. The conference addressed challenges such as the supported adult regime, elder abuse, and digital access to justice.
Regional Government measures were also highlighted, including intermediate care placements, enhanced home support, and housing adaptation projects. Madeira's recently established Elderly Statute aims to promote the autonomy, security, and well-being of older adults, prioritizing home living when feasible and desired.
