The Madeira Ethnographic Museum will open the temporary exhibition “Rituals of Passage: DEATH” on 29 October at 4 p.m. The show invites visitors to reflect on the practices, beliefs and customs linked to death, and highlights the preservation of the region's intangible cultural heritage.
Based on research into funeral rituals within the Madeiran community, the exhibition traces how these practices have changed over time alongside social, cultural and religious transformations. Many customs have been altered or have disappeared, as funerals once organised by families and communities have increasingly given way to professional services.
Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture Eduardo Jesus said the initiative offers an opportunity to deepen understanding of an important part of Madeiran cultural identity. The exhibition brings together contributions from three researchers, combining testimonies, images and knowledge about traditional practices.
