Air ticket prices between Madeira and mainland Portugal have reached record highs, with one-way flights exceeding 800 euros. Several flights are already sold out for the days of the easyJet strike, between October 2nd and 6th, and TAP and Ryanair are also increasing their fares.
The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment, and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, described the situation as regrettable, attributing it to the removal of the maximum regulatory cap. According to Jesus, this absence is causing the same phenomenon that occurred in the Azores for years, with a price escalation.
Eduardo Jesus identified deputies Carlos Pereira and Francisco Gomes as responsible for this legislative change, urging them to acknowledge their mistake and promote its correction. The official emphasized that the Regional Government had always opposed the removal of the cap, anticipating the current price surge, and that this situation represents a loss for the residents of Madeira and Porto Santo.
