The PS-Madeira parliamentary group has submitted a protest vote to the Legislative Assembly against the Regional Government's fiscal policy on fuels. The socialists argue that the government's priority of collecting tax revenue harms families' purchasing power and increases business costs.
According to the PS, the price difference between Madeira and the mainland for gasoline and diesel may become minimal, encouraging Madeirans to refuel outside the region, especially considering white-label stations and the option of refueling in Spain. The party compares the taxes on petroleum products (ISP) applied in Madeira and on the mainland, which are higher on the island.
The PS advocates for a policy of fiscal neutrality on fuels, proposing the return of fiscal gains obtained by the government. For an estimated 50-liter refueling, savings could be around 4.40 euros for gasoline and seven euros for diesel. The party recalls that a weekly ISP reduction mechanism, created in March 2022 by a socialist government, previously existed to offset additional VAT revenue due to rising fuel prices.
