Madeira Ocean 2026 Expedition Promotes Marine Biodiversity Awareness in Porto Santo

As part of the Madeira Ocean 2026 Expedition, a community engagement event took place aboard the ship Santa Maria Manuela, docked in the Port of Porto Santo. The initiative focused on marine biodiversity and ocean conservation, allowing participants to learn about the expedition's work through environmental awareness activities and scientific equipment demonstrations.

The aim was to bring the community closer to marine scientific work, fostering knowledge sharing and reinforcing the importance of preserving marine ecosystems and the sustainable use of ocean resources. The expedition is promoted by the Madeira Ocean Program, coordinated by the Regional Government of Madeira, in partnership with several entities.

Scores of students from Porto Santo schools attended, receiving explanations about the project and touring the vessel. João Cloude from ARDITI highlighted the significance of the Porto Santo visit, part of a five-stage October itinerary. Collaboration with the fishing community, including a tuna boat, was also emphasized as crucial for sharing empirical knowledge of the marine environment.
