Madeira Residents Pay Tourist Tax in Porto Santo?

The application of the tourist tax in various Madeira municipalities has raised doubts about exemptions for regional residents, especially in Porto Santo.

Madeira Residents Pay Tourist Tax in Porto Santo?

The collection of the tourist tax in Madeira has led to questions regarding exemptions for regional residents, particularly concerning stays in Porto Santo. Although the Association of Municipalities of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (AMRAM) discussed the matter, each municipality approved its own regulations.

In Porto Santo, the Municipal Chamber decided that residents of the island of Madeira should pay the tourist tax, even when visiting the archipelago for holidays. This decision, justified by the impact of Madeira residents on local tourism and associated municipal costs, was formalized in the regulation approved in November 2024.
