Data from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) confirms that Summer 2026 was indeed very hot in Madeira, particularly in the Funchal, Porto Santo, and Santana areas.
July and August recorded average temperatures that placed several weather stations among the highest values in their climatological series. Porto Santo, in particular, experienced its hottest July since 1961 and the August with the highest value in its historical series.
While not all months or stations broke records, the persistence of temperatures above the climatological norm, especially in July and August, supports the classification of an "exceptionally hot" summer for the island. June also contributed to this pattern, albeit with less statistical significance, and precipitation remained below normal throughout the period.
