The number of registered vehicles in Madeira has more than doubled over the past 25 years, showing a 145.77% increase. The figures, indicating a rise from 84,057 vehicles in 2000 to 206,588 in 2025, were provided by the Portuguese Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority.
In Funchal, the vehicle count rose by 89.53% during the same period, from 46,262 to 87,681. Two-wheeled vehicles saw the largest proportional increase in the capital, with motorcycles and similar vehicles growing from 3,184 to 10,736. Road accidents also increased considerably across the region and in the city.
The exhibition "Mobility in Funchal: The Path to Sustainability!", part of European Mobility Week, also highlights measures by Funchal City Council to improve road safety, such as raised pedestrian crossings and speed humps, alongside the growing number of electric vehicles.
