Madeira Socialist Party mourns death of Leonel Nunes, former MP and PCP leader

The Socialist Party of Madeira (PS-Madeira) has expressed its "deep sorrow" following the death of Leonel Nunes, in a released statement.

Nunes was a former deputy to the Legislative Assembly of the Region and a historic leader of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP). The socialists recalled his political career, which included a position on the PCP's Central Committee and his election as a regional deputy for the CDU coalition. Prior to joining the PCP, he was a militant and coordinating secretary for the Socialist Youth of Madeira in the period after the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974.

The PS highlighted Nunes' "profound convictions," his contribution to democratic and parliamentary debate in the region, and his dedication to public service. The statement also noted his involvement with the trade union movement, particularly as a leader of the Hotel Workers' Union, where he advocated for workers' rights. The PS-Madeira extended its condolences to his family and friends.
