The Madeiran Diaspora Council, meeting in Funchal on July 24, 2026, released the Funchal 2026 Declaration following an assessment of the Madeira Global Forum's conclusions. The document emphasizes that the Madeiran diaspora is a structuring dimension of the regional reality and a strategic asset.
The memorandum highlights the need to renew how the Region interacts with its communities, viewing them as a global network of citizens, knowledge, and investment that enhances Madeira's international projection. It advocates for consolidating a more integrated public policy oriented towards the future, capable of ensuring the transmission of cultural heritage and strengthening Madeiran identity.
The declaration stresses recognizing communities as a strategic asset and the need for a medium-term regional strategy. It also proposes policies to engage young Madeirans and those of Madeiran descent, reinforcing ties to their origins through education, culture, and digital tools, alongside the creation of a Madeiran electoral constituency for the ALRAM.
