Madeiran Illustrator Rafaela Rodrigues Wins Pingo Doce Children's Literature Award

Rafaela Rodrigues, originally from Machico on the island of Madeira, has won the illustration phase of the 13th Pingo Doce Children's Literature Award. Rodrigues was selected to illustrate "The Dragon with Hiccups," the winning text entry authored by Clementina Almeida.

With a degree in Design from the University of Madeira and Illustration from the Porto School of Artistic Arts, Rafaela Rodrigues divides her work between design, illustration, and cultural mediation. The jury highlighted the originality and visual strength of her work, noting its distinct graphic language and subtle sense of humor.

The Pingo Doce Children's Literature Award, established in 2014, has recognized 26 authors and illustrators and resulted in 12 published books. Works published under the award have sold over 205,000 copies.
