João Nélio, who arrived in Venezuela on June 15th for a visit to his daughter and to explore the country, experienced what he describes as the "biggest scare" of his life. While preparing to travel to La Guaira, the house he was in Caracas began to shake.
"The house was moving everywhere. We didn’t know which way to go. It was something I had never experienced," Nélio recounted, having never felt an earthquake before. The initial tremor was followed by aftershocks, increasing uncertainty and fear.
The experience left Nélio constantly on edge, fearing that "everything was falling apart." The earthquake has affected his sleep, with nighttime awakenings he describes as "a trauma." His return to Madeira, initially scheduled for June 29th, has been disrupted, and Nélio is awaiting flight confirmations to return home.
