The Madeira archipelago experienced seismic activity early on Sunday morning, September 13, 2026. According to official data from the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA), an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.0 was detected at 06:35, with its epicenter north of Porto Santo.
The event occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and caused no damage or danger to the population. This was the second earthquake recorded in the region in less than 24 hours. On Saturday, September 12, a smaller earthquake measuring magnitude 1.7 was detected north of Porto Moniz.
These minor earthquakes are considered part of the region's normal seismic activity, linked to geological faults in the North Atlantic, and posed no threat.
