A cyclist surprised customers and shopkeepers at Anadia Shopping by arriving with a considerable amount of packaging for recycling. The man was carrying, in at least five large bags, bottles and cans bearing the Volta symbol, intended for the automatic collection machines.
This scene illustrates a growing phenomenon in Funchal and other parts of the country, where collecting packaging with a 10-cent value per item has become a way to earn income for people with limited resources. The initiative has led to active searching for collection points and even disputes over areas for collecting bottles and cans.
