A petition has been delivered to the president of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, Rubina Leal, as well as to the Legislative Assembly and the Regional Government, aiming for the installation of speed cameras and surveillance cameras on the Via Rápida (VR1).
The document highlights that the VR1 is the island's main artery, carrying a high volume of daily traffic, but has seen an increase in dangerous driving behaviors, particularly speeding, which endanger drivers and road workers.
The signatories request the "Installation of Fixed Speed Radars" with automatic enforcement and the "Implementation of a Video Surveillance System" for traffic monitoring, emergency management, and public safety reinforcement, arguing that rising accident rates and a sense of impunity necessitate urgent intervention.
