A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to six years in prison for stabbing two men during the São Pedro festivities in Ribeira Brava. The Funchal court convicted P. Andrade of attempted murder and causing bodily harm on Tuesday, September 29th.
The attack took place on Ribeira Brava beach in the early hours of June 29, 2025. One of the victims was a Madeiran PSP officer serving in Lisbon who had returned to the island on holiday. The officer suffered serious injuries, including a punctured lung.
During the trial, the defendant and others involved stated they remembered little of the incident due to alcohol consumption. The judge noted a previous conviction for Andrade, who in September 2021 received a five-year sentence for attempting to kill his brother with a knife in Campanário and for possessing a prohibited weapon. That sentence was suspended on condition of drug addiction treatment.
