MP Francisco Gomes Denounces Pressure and Intimidation in Firefighter Corps

Chega MP Francisco Gomes has reported receiving testimonies from firefighters alleging pressure, intimidation, and persecution within various corps, including in Madeira. The complaints concern reprisals for demanding better working conditions, questioning internal decisions, or reporting management issues.

According to the accounts, firefighters have allegedly faced humiliation, isolation, veiled threats, and abuse of authority. Gomes finds it unacceptable for a fire station to become a place of fear, where those seeking respect or transparency are treated as enemies. He argued that leaders must set an example and that directors engaging in persecution are unfit to lead.

The MP also warned about the psychological impact of such environments on a profession already demanding. He advocates for increased oversight, independent complaint investigation mechanisms, and protection for whistleblowers. Chega will continue to receive and forward these complaints, asserting that valuing firefighters also means ensuring respect, justice, and transparency within their organizations.
