High-Speed Vessels (HSVs), popularly called 'narco-boats,' have been the target of increasing seizures off the Portuguese coast, with a recent incident occurring in Madeira's waters. These vessels, technically defined by Decree-Law No. 43/2026, typically measure between 8 and 14 meters and are equipped with multiple powerful engines.
HSVs are crucial for drug trafficking due to their speed, which can exceed 150 km/h, and maneuverability, making interception difficult. In addition to direct drug transport, some narco-boats serve as logistical support, carrying fuel and supplies for long-duration operations at sea. Seizures of fuel associated with this type of support have surged in Portugal in 2026.
