Major traffic changes will take effect in central Funchal starting tomorrow, September 2nd. These include the introduction of approximately 775 meters of new bus lanes, the removal of parking spaces, and restrictions on pedestrian access across the Pelourinho Bridge.
The Funchal City Council states these measures are intended to make public transport faster and more reliable. However, the Liberal Initiative (IL) has cautioned that reducing capacity on already congested roads could create further bottlenecks and shift traffic problems to surrounding streets.
The lanes will be reserved for regular public passenger transport, taxis, emergency and rescue vehicles, vehicles performing urgent public-interest duties, and police missions. Motorcycles and motorized tricycles will also be permitted.
