Commentator and international relations specialist Nuno Rogeiro argued during a conference at the Fórum Madeira Global that the archipelago holds a strategic relevance "disproportionate to its size". Rogeiro stressed the need for Portugal to better utilize Madeira's geographical positioning.
According to Rogeiro, "no island is an island in geopolitical terms," emphasizing that Madeira is connected to international dynamics, maritime routes, and the interests of major powers. He also advocated for increased state investment in defense and security, considering the island's strategic position warrants enhanced attention to matters such as maritime surveillance and submarine cable security.
