The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has advocated for the establishment of an electoral constituency for Madeiran emigrants to the Legislative Assembly of Madeira. The proposal, put forth by deputy Mariusky Spínola during the Madeira Global 2026 Forum, aims to ensure direct representation for Madeirans living abroad in the regional parliament.
Mariusky Spínola argued that this electoral constituency would enable Madeiran communities overseas to elect their own representatives, giving them a stronger voice in decisions affecting Madeira's future. The deputy also highlighted issues faced by emigrants, such as delays in the recognition of qualifications and difficulties with consular services and AIMA, as well as air travel connectivity problems, citing the community in South Africa as an example.
The JPP believes that increased political participation from emigrants would strengthen regional autonomy and bring decision-making closer to citizens. The proposal aligns with this year's Madeira Global Forum theme, focused on strengthening ties between the region and its communities abroad.
