PAN Madeira Aims to Bring Climate Governance Proposals to European Plan

PAN Madeira organized a meeting in Funchal, titled ‘From Local Action to Global Impact: Climate Governance in Island Territories’, aiming to move beyond debate and generate concrete proposals for the European plan.

Mónica Freitas, coordinator of PAN Madeira, explained that the initiative, held in partnership with the VALORIZA research center of the Polytechnic University of Portalegre, seeks to bring together politics, science, and civil society. The meeting gathers political representatives, researchers, and civil society organizations to discuss the challenges of climate governance in island territories, with a particular focus on the specificities of Madeira and the Azores.

The initiative will continue in the Azores and later in Cape Verde, fostering the exchange of experiences between the archipelagos. PAN Madeira believes this cooperation can influence public policy definition and prioritize climate action in governmental budgets and plans. Freitas also highlighted that, despite lacking representation in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, the party continues to find ways to exert political influence, as demonstrated by this event.
