Paulo do Nascimento Cabral Welcomes ETS Review with Benefits for Madeira and Azores

MEP Paulo do Nascimento Cabral has welcomed the conclusion of the review of the Emissions Trading System (ETS), deeming the approved changes a significant step forward for Madeira and the Azores.

The measures acknowledge the specific circumstances of the Outermost Regions (ORs), including the extension of derogations for maritime transport and flights until 2035, and for waste-to-energy facilities in the ORs. The package also includes support for sustainable aviation and maritime fuels to offset energy transition costs.

Cabral stated that it is possible to balance climate ambition with territorial cohesion, recalling his engagement with the European Commission to advocate for the ORs' interests. This review precedes the new EU Strategy for the Outermost Regions, expected in September.
