The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) is calling on the Madeiran population to participate "massively" in the national day of struggle scheduled for this Saturday, starting at 10 AM. The initiative in Madeira is organized by the Union of Madeira Unions (USAM).
The gathering will take place at the Casa Sindical, with speeches to be delivered later on Rua Dr. Fernão Ornelas. Among the reasons presented by the party for this mobilization are low wages, the absence of an insularity bonus in the private sector, and the high cost of housing.
The PCP also denounces precariousness, irregular working hours, and job instability in sectors such as hospitality, restaurants, tourism, and civil construction, despite increases in activity numbers. The party deems the loss of purchasing power for workers and the difficulties in covering essential expenses unacceptable.
