The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) organized a horn honking protest on Avenida do Mar, near the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, to draw attention to the increase in fuel prices.
Ricardo Lume, a member of the PCP's Central Committee, stated that the initiative arose from a "public outcry" and regretted that the Regional Government's measures do not meet the real needs of the Madeiran population. The party highlighted that diesel prices have increased by over 40% and gasoline by 26% in one year, impacting all other products and the budgetary stability of families and businesses.
The PCP contrasted Madeira's situation with the Azores, where fuel prices are, on average, 15 cents per liter lower, and price updates are monthly. The party argues that the Autonomous Region has the power to safeguard citizens' interests and warned of its readiness to intensify the struggle for better conditions and wages.
