The Regional Secretary for Economy, José Manuel Rodrigues, called for Madeira's companies to be prepared for the technological transformation driven by artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at the University of Madeira, Rodrigues set a goal for at least 25% of regional SMEs to use AI by 2030, projecting productivity gains of 15% to 20%.
Rodrigues emphasized that the objective is not merely to introduce the technology but to enhance decision-making capabilities regarding its use. AI adoption should focus on solving specific company problems, such as improving production, reducing waste, and deepening customer knowledge, rather than being seen solely as acquiring new tools.
Highlighting that micro-enterprises constitute 86% of Madeira's business fabric, the secretary stressed the importance of bridging the knowledge and resource gap for effective AI integration. He cited data showing only 9.4% of Portuguese small businesses use AI, compared to 17% in Europe, underscoring Madeira's need to reduce this disparity to maintain competitiveness.
The official rejected the notion that responsibility for AI-assisted decisions can be diluted, stating that ultimate accountability always rests with the decision-maker. He also mentioned the importance of understanding regulations like the European AI Act and GDPR.
