The petition "For the Safeguarding of Madeira's Urban Model", which gathered over 1,700 signatures, has been formally admitted by the Legislative Assembly.
The initiative, led by Nuno Morna, a former regional deputy for the Liberal Initiative, has been referred to the 3rd Permanent Specialised Committee on Environment, Climate and Natural Resources for examination. Morna announced the development on social media, stressing that admission is a crucial step, though it does not guarantee the approval of its proposals.
The document calls for a parliamentary debate on high-rise construction and the future of urban development on the island, advocating for greater consideration of Madeira's existing urban character, landscape, regional identity, and the quality of life for future generations. Morna thanked supporters and argued that Madeira's future should be shaped through debate and long-term planning.
