PEV contests approval of Curral das Freiras cable car project

The Ecologist Party Os Verdes contests the approval of the urbanistic project for the cable car and adventure park in Curral das Freiras.

The Ecologist Party Os Verdes (PEV) has expressed opposition to the licensing of the urbanistic project for the “Cable Car System and Adventure Park” in Curral das Freiras, approved by the Câmara de Lobos Municipal Council. The party deems the decision detrimental to public interest, arguing it fails to protect the population or the landscape.

The PEV also contests the requirement for 100 parking spaces in Jardim da Serra, believing the resolution, with or without this condition, harms the quality of life and safety of residents, and does not mitigate the project's environmental and landscape impacts. The party alleges the project violated Câmara de Lobos' Municipal Master Plan (PDM) and questions the terms of the concession with the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN).

The party further criticizes the omission of access and parking plans in evaluation documents, suspecting this was done to conceal the true extent of environmental impacts and the project's cost. PEV maintains its opposition to what it calls a “megalomaniacal project,” warning of environmental, landscape, and local population risks, and questions the economic sustainability of the venture, calling for its halt.
