The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) confirmed the arrest of a 33-year-old primary school teacher, strongly suspected of committing child sexual abuse, allegedly at a school in Funchal.

The arrest was made on July 20th, following an investigation that began in February after a complaint was filed with the PJ. Evidence gathered was deemed sufficient by the Public Prosecutor's Office to issue an arrest warrant.

Search and seizure warrants were also executed, collecting further items that reinforce suspicions of the crime. The detainee appeared before a judge on Tuesday for his first judicial interrogation at the Funchal Judicial Court, where coercive measures were to be applied. The PJ did not disclose the teacher's identity, the educational establishment, the number of alleged victims, or the period during which the events are said to have occurred.
