The PME Líder 2025 diploma award ceremony, organized by Santander Portugal, took place at the Savoy Palace in Funchal. The event brought together entrepreneurs and institutional representatives to recognize the small and medium-sized enterprises that most contribute to the growth of the national economy.
At the opening, Santander Portugal's executive administrator, Amílcar Lourenço, presented a positive outlook on Madeira's economy, noting 61 consecutive months of growth, a robust job market with a 4.5% unemployment rate in the first quarter, and wages rising above inflation. Lourenço also praised the sustained evolution of the tourism sector, with growth in guests, overnight stays, and especially revenue, advocating for a focus on quality.
Amílcar Lourenço also mentioned the balance of regional public finances, with a budget surplus of 2.3% of GDP and public debt around 65.8% of GDP. However, he warned of international challenges such as geopolitical rivalry, European slowdown, conflicts, digitalization, and talent scarcity, focusing on artificial intelligence as a transformative force requiring investment in talent and knowledge to complement humans. Santander reaffirmed its commitment to Portugal's business community.
Paulo Portas, former deputy prime minister, also spoke, highlighting the evolution of the island's economy and the 61 consecutive months of positive economic activity, echoing Lourenço's remarks.
