Porto Santo Could Operate Entirely on Renewable Energy by 2026

The Regional Secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, Pedro Rodrigues, announced that 2026 could be a historic year for Porto Santo, with the island potentially operating entirely on renewable energy on multiple days of the year. The announcement was made during the celebrations for the 191st anniversary of the Municipality of Porto Santo.

With the combination of the new Wind Farm, Photovoltaic Park, and Battery Central under construction, Rodrigues guaranteed that it will be possible to "switch off all thermal units on many days of the year." This energy transition will place Porto Santo "at the forefront of the energy transition, establishing itself as a national and international benchmark for sustainability."

Rodrigues also highlighted the island's development in recent decades, noting a population growth of over 26% in the last ten years and a 48% increase in employed individuals. Tourism saw over 566,000 overnight stays in 2025, with a 28% growth in the first four months of 2026.
