The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, announced that the new Porto Santo Health Unit is expected to be completed by Summer 2028. This project is considered one of the most significant ever undertaken on the island.
The first phase, involving the building's structure, cost around four million euros and was finished in 2025. The second phase, now commencing, is budgeted at approximately 29 million euros, bringing the total investment, including VAT, to 35.5 million euros. The cost increase is attributed to updated prices for materials and labor.
The new facility will offer various healthcare services and a 20-bed continuing care unit. The Regional Government also plans to construct housing for healthcare professionals to encourage their relocation to the island. European funds from the Portugal 2030 program will contribute to the financing.
