Portugal Ablaze: July Begins with Wildfires and Extreme Heat

Wildfires have once again plagued Portugal at the beginning of July, amidst a summer scenario of extreme heat and adverse atmospheric conditions that created a high risk across a large part of the mainland.

The most concerning focus was in Vouzela, Viseu district, where over a thousand operatives and several aerial resources battled the flames, which caused injuries and consumed a significant area. The Government declared a state of alert for the entire mainland, implementing exceptional measures to reduce ignition risk and facilitate response.

Portugal also activated external aid mechanisms, receiving support from Spain and Italy, as well as European solidarity. Authorities warn that the coming days remain critical, with the alert status potentially extending and firefighting efforts heavily dependent on weather developments.
