The Portuguese Ladies Benevolent Society in Caracas is ensuring approximately 200 daily meals and supporting 147 families affected by the earthquake, many of whom are from Madeira. This humanitarian effort has become even more critical following the recent tragedy in La Guaira and Caracas.
During a visit by Rui Abreu, specialists from the Lisbon Fire Brigade conducted a technical inspection of the facilities. The assessment found no structural damage, allowing the institution to continue its operations without interruption. Director Lucecita Fernandes emphasized that knowing the building is sound enables the Portuguese Ladies to maintain community support during this emergency.
Fernandes noted an increase in aid requests after the earthquake and expressed gratitude for the Regional Government's support, highlighting that many assisted individuals are Madeiran. Rui Abreu mentioned the increased extraordinary social support fund for Venezuela, from 60,000 to 150,000 euros, suggesting the Portuguese Ladies may benefit due to their daily work with affected families.
